FAQ's...
Q: What's the difference between an address
with the "www" and without (ie, http://www.WomanMade.net and
http://WomanMade.net)?
A: None. This setting is dependent upon
what the server administrator chooses. We chose to make sites available to the
Internet both ways. One works the same as the other. In fact, capital letters
are also, for the most part, optional. We use them in our address to
distinguish words but http://womanmade.net works just the same way as
http://www.WomanMade.net. Experiment - try different capitalizations and try
different URLs with and without the "www". Some will work... some will not.
Today, most do work both ways.
Q: Can visitors find my Woman Made web site
through the search engines?
A: Your web site is part of the Woman Made
Gallery On Line Artists' Registry. We link to every artist participating in
this registry. Generally, linked sites will be picked up by some search engine
spiders (not directories), however, we cannot guarantee that search engine
spiders will include your web site in their database. Your unique URL (web site
address) is, though, eligible for inclusion on virtually every search engine
out there. You can submit your URL (ie, YourName.womanmade.net) to search
engines and directories for inclusion or you may ask our web developers,
Galganov & Associates, will run banners for you on their
WallpaperOriginals.com group of
web sites at a rate of US$1.50/thousand impressions (Payable in advance by
Visa, MasterCard or Discover). These links are typically picked up by search
engines helping to establish position in those search engines.
Q: How long does it take to get listed in
search engines and directories?
A: Your web site is linked from the main
galleries page on WomanMade.net and from the main page of galganov.net. Listing
on these two sites contribute to helping get your web site into search engines.
Typically, it takes around one month to start getting listed. You should,
yourself, submit your URL to search engines and this will, in some cases, help.
In most cases, patience is the key and your site will be picked up by the major
search engines. You may also purchase listing in some search engines and these
paid listing should show up almost immediately.
Note: Multiple submissions for a web site already included in a database
or submission of an excessive number of pages from within the same web site is
considered spamming. Database managers will block all submissions from an
offending address
Q: Is my listing is search engines permanent?
A: For the most part, "yes." While the odd
few purge their databases to keep them small, manageable and fresh; most, once
indexed, will keep your URL in their database. Some search engines will spider
your web site and find and index links but most will keep only the first page
listed permanently. It can happen that, after being listed you find you have
been de-listed. Don't get angry - it's not personal and it's not about
your site. It can happen. The only time it's personal is when a search engine
administrator believes the offending site has attempted to spam their database.
Q: Should I submit sub-pages from my site (like
the gallery page)?
A: No. In most cases, search engines and
directories want you to submit only your main page. If their site is
designed to list sub-pages then their technology is also designed to do the job
of finding those pages without our help.
Note: submitting these pages can also get your address banned from
search engines.
Q: How long should it take for my site to start
receiving traffic?
A: You may start to see small numbers of
visitors the very first day - IF you tell all your friends and family... but
don't be discouraged. Our experience shows that it takes up to six (6) months
until your site "starts" to see visitors. It will take another good half year
until those numbers of visitors grow to any appreciable way. It is significant
to note that effective listing in search engines is, at least in part, a
matter of time and staying power. It can take what seems like an eternity to
gain position in the search engines. Be patient - and persevere!
Q: Should I do anything on my own to promote
my web site?
A: Of course! A signature at the bottom
your E-mail is one way to put your web address in the E-mail box of everyone
with whome you communicate. You can also submit your web site to search engines
and directories. Remember, standard Terms
of Service do apply. You can include your web address on all printed
communications, flyers, letters, etc. You may also purchase advertising on
sites such as WallpaperOriginals.com. This is a high-traffic web site where
your advertisment can be seen thousands of times a day - and interested
parties have to opportunity to access, directly, your WomanMade web
site. Contact us for details
about advertising on WallpaperOriginals.
Q: Can I see the number of visitors to my web
site?
A: Not at this time. Galganov & Associates
will be providing, on a fee basis, access to statistics on individual web
sites. Information will be posted on the
services page.
Q: Do I have to keep the password given to me
by you?
A: No. You may change it but it must be at
least 6 to 8 characters long - alpha-numeric - and contain at least 2 letters
and numbers. If, as does happen on the Internet, a security breach has been
discovered, your password may be changed temporarily and you may be asked to
provide a new one. Please remember, only people with authority have access to
members' areas. Do not share your password. If you believe your password
has been compromised, please request a change without delay.
